This is a scarce miniature map by Abraham Ortelius, produced for the 'Epitome Theatri Orteliani' in 1589. Engraved by Philip Galle, and published by Peter Heyns in Amsterdam.
A relatively detailed miniature, featuring a heart shaped cartouche, containing the word, 'Irlandia', the design also includes two ships and a monster in the sea. Ireland is oriented with north facing east, and is framed within a thin decorated border, the word Hibernia appears outside border, top centre. There is latin letterpress text on verso.
Miniature maps have become a large and interesting area for collectors over the last couple of years, as they are usually a starting point for new collectors because of their cost and portability. Prices for good quality miniatures have been rising during the same period.
This example is uncoloured as issued, and is particularly attractive. Scarce and collectable early map of Ireland in very good condition. A good addition to any serious collection of maps relating to Ireland.
One of our little gems!
