Charming Coloured Map of Counties Fermanagh. Leitrim and Longford by Alfred Adlard for Halls Ireland 1841.

 

Ireland : It's Scenery and Character &c was created by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Carter Hall between 1841 and 1843. Their intention 'to promote the welfare of Ireland - but not by a sacrifice of the truth' resulted in a work that was first issued in monthly parts, with each part containing 'Two engravings of Scenery Upon Steel" and an 'engraved Map of a County or District'.

 

The part works eventually ended up in book format, the First edition being published by How and Parsons, the Second by Jeremiah How in 1846 and the Third by Hall & Virtue & Co. in 1852.

 

All the early maps were engraved by Alfred Adlard, but subsequent editions contain maps by Hughes after Adlards style. The maps appeared in coloured and uncoloured states, and there were 16 county maps in total (Six Maps combine 2 counties, 5 combine three counties). The publication also included a General map of Ireland and a map of the Lakes of Killarney. 

 

Both maps and plates are charming, attractive and popular collectables, and although frequently seen in the past, have become less common recently. Interesting to note that they were first issued barely 3-4 years before the Great Famine.
