Paul Rapin de Thoyras was a Frenchman responsible for publishing ten elaborate volumes on the History of England Histoire D'Angleterre published between 1724-27. In 1745 his work was translated and updated by the Rev.Nicholas Tindal, and English historian and academic, and was called Tindal's Continuation of Mr.Rapin s History of England .

Included with the English edition of Rapin's work was an atlas containing 45 maps, battle plans and town plans of the Spanish War of Succession. All were engraved by Richard William Seale and John Basire.

Richard William Seale was a successful engraver and publisher from London, responsible for publishing a number of fine and detailed maps of the continents between 1744-47. His work is highly respected.

Cities and towns included on this map are left to right Drogheda, Londonderry, Kinsale Harbour, Charlemont Fort, Dublin, Coleraine, Harbour of Corke, Gallway, Kilkenny, Carickfergus, City of Corke, Athlone, Waterford, Bellfast, The Royal Fort of Dungannon, and Limerick.

Included are the various streets, layouts of dwellings, roads, fortifications, rivers, islands and bridges etc. Interestingly, Kilkenny is the only town not shown in plan form. The City of Kilkenny, is shown in prospect form, and considerable licence is taken by the artist. There is also a key identifying the various buildings in the Marble City.
