Laid down

A map that is backed is said to be laid down.

Laid lines

Lines in laid paper that run lengthwise in the original sheet and at right angles to the chain lines. They are finer than the chain lines and more closely placed.

Laid paper

Paper made by hand by straining a slurry through a wiremesh held in a wooden deckle. The wire mesh imparts the chain and laid lines to the paper.
