Pierre Du Val
1619-1683, French Cartographer and Geographer
Pierre Du Val (sometimes Duval) was the son-in-law of the great French cartographer and Geographer to the King, Nicolas Sanson.
Although closely associated with the Sansons, his individual output, while not of the same volume as the Sansons was relatively prolific and influential. He published a wide range of atlases, individual maps and even some spectacular wall maps.
Du Val was an innovative entrepreneur and also specialised in producing parlour games designed to teach geography. His small sized works were also of note, and his tiny map of Ireland, 105mm x 127mm, is highly sought after by collectors. His other output also included geographical tables, chronologies and genealogies.
