Find Maps by Bernard Scalé

Bernard Scalé produced a number of maps and charts of Ireland during the period 1760 to 1787, and as a brother-in-law of the famous John Rocque, was involved with a famous reissue of Rocque's important 1756 plan of Dublin in 1787, with "additions and improvements".

Although, his 'City and Suberbs of Dublin' published in 1773, was well received, Scalé's one major work is the "Hibernian Atlas or Gerneral Description of the Kingdom of Ireland", published in 1776 by Sayer & Bennett. A small atlas with a map of Ireland, a map of each of the provinces and a map for each of the counties. Each map with an attractive compass rose, and good detail, and an attractive page of accompanying descriptive text. The atlas proved popular and was reissued in 1776 by Robert Sayer and later in 1798 by Laurie & Whittle.
