Bacon & Co
Mid-late 19th century, British Publishers
Baconand Co. have been around as an entity for the best part of two centuries, and today Bacon & Co continue their trading activities in conjunction with W. & A.K.Johnston.
Started by George Washington Bacon c.1830, they are relatively late publishers from the collector's point of view, as most of their important output was produced in the late nineteenth century. However these works are getting sufficiently less common of late to merit their burgeoning collectebility . They are also eminently suited to the new collector because of their relatively low prices at the moment.
In1876 the company acquired plates from the London Newspaper, "The WeeklyDespatch", and the maps appeared as "Bacon's New Quarto Atlas". These maps had appeared as "The Dispatch Atlas" and as the "Cassell's BritishAtlas", 10 years beforehand. These maps were reissued under different titles and styles over the following years, the most notable being "TheNew Ordnance Atlas of the British Isles" .
There were numerous maps relating to Ireland contained in the various atlases. Bacon published an Issac Slater atlas in 1883, Slater having taken over the business of Pigot some years earlier. In 1893 Bacon & Co acquired the businessof J.Wyld.
Alternative Names
The company changed their trading name on numerous occasions over the years and were variously known asW.G.Bacon and Co, G.W.Bacon & Co., Bacon's, and Bacon & Co.
