St. George Cathedral in VeniceMallet was a French mathematician and engineer who served time in the Portuguese army, and later under Louis XIV. His publications 'Description de L'Univers' (1683) in 5 vols. and  'Travaux de Mars Ou L'Art de la Guerre', (1684) 3 vols. are notable for their numerous small copperplate maps, plans and views.

As he had travelled widely, many of Mallet's maps and the designs of instruments, fortification plans and architectural views were surveyed and drawn by himself. Wrote extensively on military matters and practical geometry.

His maps and illustrations are very popular with collectors today.
